How it works
Section 7-15A-6 NMSA 1978, as amended by Senate Bill 2 (2026) from July 1, 2026: the tax is the New Mexico miles times the mills per mile of the declared gross weight class (1 mill = $0.001). A vehicle classified as a one-way hauler (customarily one-way, 45% or more of the year's miles empty, sworn application approved) pays two-thirds of it. Miles already paid at a port of entry are left out of the return.
Sample data: 1,500 miles at 80,000 lb (78,001 lb and over, 59.10 mills) = $88.65; the same miles at the one-way haul rate would be $59.10.
The return is quarterly and due by the last day of the month after the quarter: Saturday, October 31, 2026 for July to September 2026, the first quarter at the new rates (a Saturday; file by the Friday before to be safe). A return is due even without New Mexico miles.
